Thursday, August 20th (day 8)
Another great day on the long trail. Since we did a long day yesterday, we were able to do a shorter mile day today, which is nice because the trail was more difficult today. We hiked 9 miles, plus an extra half mile field trip.
We passed by hiker, "Pringles" today for the second time. He has two cars, which he uses to drive north up the trail and hike south to the second car, making it so that he doesn't have to carry a full pack and can sleep in a hotel at night. As he passes the northbound hikers, he always offers some Pringles. We like Pringles.
About a mile before our shelter for the night, there is a road crossing in which we hiked a half mile up to a restaurant called the whistle stop. We stayed an hour and a half, getting out of the heat and enjoying a nice meal. It is such a hiker friendly place! Our waitress even offered and drive us back the half mile to the trail when we were finished. What an angel! At the tail head another little angel, about 7 years old, gave us some tic tacs, and told us they would help us hike better. With bellies full of food, ice cream, and about a half gallon of lemonade, we forced ourselves up the steep mountain to our home for the night. So far, we are the only ones here, and have enjoyed soaking our feet in the nearby stream and relaxing.
