Monday, August 17th (day 5)
We made it to our first town stop today. It was great to get good food, a shower, clean clothes, and I have a sweet bed to sleep in tonight. Hiking is going slowly, trying to be easy on Zippy's knee. She feels good once we stop, but really hurts after about 5 miles of hiking. Today we hiked 10.6 miles with a good hour rest in the middle. We hitch hiked into town with no problem. It was Zippy's first time hitch hiking, so it was fun!We are staying at the Green Mountain House hostel, which is one of my all time favorites along the AT. We have great company here. We would like to take a day off and stay again tomorrow, but the hostel is booked up. We will hike out tomorrow.
Hotdog and Princess extend a warm hello to the both of you. That Hostel room looks like a welcome reprieve. We read that you took advantage of Stratton Pond. Princess soaked her feet in it for a few minutes and then we had to hit the trail to make our goal which was to get out of the mountain and back to the car. We experienced a bit of Trail Magic at our 13th mile. Walking along a desolate mountain road we were offered a ride from a friendly couple who were dropping off a hiker named Monk. They drove us the 5+ miles to our car. Princess was so relieved. Happy Trails!
